Bras and the Breast Cancer Cover-up
"Whom can you trust if your culture's greatest enemy to your health? Believe your leading culture Authorities? Can you trust your government's culture? Can you trust your culture to the private sector? "
We asked these questions in 1995, at the end of the book, Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras. Before writing our book, we sent information about our research at the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, President's Cancer Panel, American Medical Women's Association, National Organization for Women, National Women's Health Network and National Women's Health Resource Center. There was no answer. Not one. Given the lack of interest, we decided to publish our findings in a book get the information directly to women who needed to hear it.
But women are the message?
It was published 13 years since our first book was. During this period, more than 500,000 women died from breast cancer in the U.S. alone, with another two million have been that diagnosed this terrible disease – a Disease that is preventable in most cases simply by loosening or removing the bra. And yet, this life-saving information actively suppressed and censored by Lingerie and medical industries.
Examples of suppression and censorship
A large public relations firm in New York City was willing and eager to help us Release of this information to the public. "My wife just had breast cancer, and I'm sure you're right," said the head of the company. A large Media release and celebration were planned. Days later, however, the company moved to help his offer, stating that one of her clients, a large medical center to their Objections to work with us.
A Sydney, Australia agreed PR company to publish our work if we did outreach efforts in their country. But he reversed himself. We were asked if they had any conflicts of interest, such as lingerie-industry clients. They said they had none. But as it turned out, she had represented a pharmaceutical company that makes breast cancer treatment drug, and the prevention of breast cancer and its treatment are in conflict, she explains.
The Intimate Apparel Council (which is the American Association for the multi-billion dollar industry threatened BH), our publisher, Avery Publishing Group, in an action, if published Dressed To Kill was. The publisher said the public would help spread the word. The action was never carried out.
After the book was published, the NBC-TV news show Dateline was interested in a story about our work. We were intensely skeptical of a reporter who was interviewed with a trailer. The story was then abruptly terminated. The manufacturer declares confidence that the policy of General Electric, the NBC is to prevent, uncover news stories that are negative to other GE Interests influence. As it happens, GE is a manufacturer of mammography equipment.
Women's magazines such as Glamour, Self and others ran stories critical condemnation encouraging our work, and finding "experts" women continue to wear bras. Elle magazine planned a positive story about the bra / cancer link, but was in the story moves forced by AB Marketers. In various newspapers around the world, as the Guardian in Britain, stories were due before the release drawn by fear that they "public panic" to advertisers, including their underwear.
The British Fashion Council (which is the British Equivalent of the Intimate Apparel Council) publishes the Breast Health Handbook in 1996 to oppose our efforts. It announced the creation of the breakthrough Breast Cancer Foundation, the donations of bra sales get genetic breast cancer research fund was. The book criticizes our work, and claimed: "The idea that the Wearing a bra encourages cancer by catching toxins has recently been forward by researchers at the Institute for Studies Culturogenic (sic) brought in Hawaii. Researchers from more August establishments promptly dismissed it as gossip. "Without any evidence or medical research, the book informs women wearing bras a health necessity, and should so early to prevent possible damage in the lives of breast cancer will be supported.
Our original publisher, Avery, was bought by the giant Penguin Putnam in 1998. The new list of publishers, not restore the book for three years and refused to release the rights to the rights holders, Singer and Grismaijer. The book was not practical, and it was probably gone out of print. Finally, after repeated requests, the publishing rights to us were published in October, 2001. (ISCD Press has been in print hold, since then.)
A television documentary was produced in 2000 by Channel 4 in Britain, called Bras-the bare facts. In the documentary, 100 women with fibrocystic breast cancer was documented BH-free for three months, the effects on the breast cysts and pain. Two prominent British breast surgeons conducted the study. The results were amazing, and clearly showed that the bra is a serious risk to health. We were on the program of the bra / cancer link, as the most plausible was interviewed and discuss important interviewed by the doctors. Some theorized that, in addition to the lymphatic impairment, the AB could also cancer by overheating of the breasts. The documentary made headlines in British Commonwealth countries was all over the world, but made no mention of it at all in the U.S.. At the next day tried headlines in Britain, the fears of the bra / cancer link to repress it, and the doctors in the study quickly distanced themselves from the cancer problem, say women still wear bras. Her research for the documentary should be published in a medical journal, but never was. And no additional research always to follow-up materialized on their work, they said they would do. Extensive coverage of the program was available on the Internet in the near future, After it aired, but most of the texts were removed shortly thereafter.
No follow-up studies were conducted to refute, or to confirm our research. None. While a Harvard study, published in European Journal of Cancer in 1991 found that bra-free women have a lower rate of breast cancer, the results were not the focus of the research they were conducting and were as unimportant and not pursued further. In fact, apart from our original 1991-1993 Bra and Breast Cancer Study, discussed in detail in Dressed To Kill, and our follow-up research in Fiji, discussed in our book, Get It Off!, Is there no other studies on the bra / cancer link. Not even a letter or discussion on the topic can be found in every medical journal. After decades of breast cancer research, the bra is still completely as well as a potential factor for the test is ignored. It is like the study of foot disease and ignoring shoes.
Keeping the Public Mystified
This lack in research and the resulting ignorance, will be used by cancer organizations to justify further repression of the output. As the American Cancer Society States on its Web site (ignoring the Harvard study), 'There is no scientifically sound studies that show a correlation between wearing bras of all types and show the occurrence of breast cancer. Two anthropologists made this association in a book called Dressed to Kill. Their study was not to the usual principles of epidemiological Research carried out and not take into account other variables, including the known risk factors breast cancer. There is no other credible Research, this claim in no way confirmed. "And they do not seem interested in the funding of such studies in the near future either. There are other organizations the similarly critical of the bra / cancer link to lack of research, while at the same time prevented any research on the subject.
Of particular interest is when breast cancer organizations antagonistic to explain the problem of the bra / cancer link to be "misinformation" or a "myth" without any scientific study to support their claims. They say bras are important for women to wear for support, without any evidence Bras safe nor necessary. Then encourage regular mammograms, cancer prevention drug therapy (not recognize that "Prevention Therapy" is a oxymoron) and even preventive mastectomies (which means those who are at high risk for breast cancer will not, but to get it to her breast as a preventive strategy away). Of course it is better to remove the bra, rather than the breasts, but BH distance is not billable procedures.
Note that bras are with other health problems such as headaches, numbness in the hands, back pain and other posture problems, cysts, pain, skin depigmentation associated been, and much more. And blockade of the lymphatic system, the result of the bra is narrow, has previously been implicated in various forms of cancer combined. Of course, the need BH / Cancer Link further research, while the women take the precaution of loosening up
Why the resistance?
What harm could it be in our following simple advice, or even in the study of this problem? Why the defensive reaction?
There are three reasons:
1st The bra industry fear of class action. Many insiders have admitted for years that the industry suspected cancer were exciting to handle. You know that tight bras cause cysts and pain. It's just a question of time before an action against a bra manufacturer. As a defense, is to shift the industry to blame for the customers and claimed that most women wear to get their bras too tight, and should be professional accessories. (How to get a correct push-up bra?) Breaking ranks with their industry colleagues, and try on the bad News use are several bra manufacturers are now offering new patented bras claim that the damage, including cancer, caused by conventional bra to soften.
2nd Medical technology is the billions of profits each year on the detection and treatment of breast cancer. As mentioned above, there is a conflict between the prevention of and treatment of disease, particularly if the prevention does not include drugs or surgery. The fact is that our therapeutic focus, profit-oriented medical System makes a killing treatment of this disease and has lost billions when breast cancer is out of fashion along with bras.
In addition, will revolutionize the topic BH the field of breast cancer, embarrassing many researchers. Breast Cancer Research to date has the bra the problem is ignored as a result seriously, why the "experts" still do not the cause of over 70% of all breast cancer cases explain mistakes. Career cancer researchers WHO have the BH problem is ignored this fatal error in their work that they do not are inclined to admit to admit in their lives.
3rd Finally there is the dogmatic, fear resistance from some women to find their personal identity, connected with their bras that they would rather risk cancer than be bra-free (what some women actually said.) women are cultural institutions, and so long as Culture a natural bustline be scorned, many women submit to the pain, red spots or depressions, cysts, and even cope with the threat of cancer better Potential of public ridicule (which never really happened.)
There are also women, the myth that bras will prevent droopy breasts feel. The bra industry is this a myth, while still encouraging it to improve sales. In fact, bras cause breast to fall, like the breasts depends on the bra for support and the natural support mechanisms atrophy are not using.
Despite the resistance, but some women get the message. And many members health professionals, the bras are also suspected for years, are now spreading this message. As women hear the news and discover that removing the bra removed and cysts and pain, spreads the message on through word of mouth.
There are now thousands of websites on the subject, including many members of the health Doctors, naturopathic doctors, osteopathic physicians, chiropractors, massage therapists, lymphatic specialists, nutritionists and others who care about the women and help to end this epidemic. Grass Roots Efforts to disseminate such information and to keep alive, the traditional medical approach to research, the self- disqualified, has pushed for lack of interest and conflicts of interest.
If a disease caused by the culture and their habits, attitudes, modes and Industrial caused, it is bound to be resistance to change. Industries that will contribute to the disease and defensive sectors that benefit from conflict Diseases is. However, the truth one way out, in spite of resistance and repression. Thank God the truth has a way out.
About the Author
Sydney Ross Singer is a medical anthropologist and director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease, located in Hawaii. His unique form of applied medical anthropology searches for the cultural/lifestyle causes of disease. His working assumption is that our bodies were made to be healthy, but our culture and the attitudes and behaviors it instills in us can get in the way of health. By eliminating these causes, the body is allowed to heal. Since most diseases of our time are caused by our culture/lifestyle, this approach has resulted in many original discoveries into the cause, and cure, of many common diseases. It also makes prevention possible by eliminating adverse lifestyle practices. Sydney works with his co-researcher and wife, Soma Grismaijer, and is the author of several groundbreaking health books.
Sydney’s background includes a B.S. in biology from the University of Utah; an M.A. degree from Duke University in biochemistry and anthropology; 2 years of medical school training at UTMB at Galveston, along with Ph.D. training in medical humanities.
