How can I avoid strong odors from vintage clothing?
My aunt died a few months, and during the cleaning out of their camp, I found Boxes and boxes of vintage clothing from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. There are dresses, coats, shoes, evening bags, underwear, gloves, aprons, scarves, Hats … they are all in perfect condition, but they have this terrible odor to them. Not BO, but only one age-smell, as they were 70 years in memory for the last! They are beautiful, expensive clothes and deserve to receive and pass on a new home. I want to sell them, but how can I smell, if it so terrible. The clothes were hung in the air for the last 2 months (in the garage) and they smell is still bad. I tried the objects, the laundry can be washed, but anyway … they stink! Fabreeze also does not work. There are too many to have dry cleaned. How do I get the smell of those clothes. Any ideas? I really want to sell them and top dollar, but how do I do if they smelled so funny!
Charcoal, cat litter and baking soda to absorb any odors. You can try to encapsulate some of the elements in a large plastic storage container with a larger quantity of any of the above elements. I have done these books with musty stinky and it helps in reducing the radio. You need to let the pieces are sealed for at least two days – over a longer period is not a better job.
