I want to work for a magazine …?

I would love that his art director or something similar in a fashion magazine, But mags like Cosmopolitan, Vogue, etc. are all based in New York. I live in California and all the magazines in my area are news magazines. Is there a way to to function well known magazines such as I mentioned above, without living in New York? It seems unfair that we have to live mags New York to work in fashion in popularity. Wow, that sounded really stupid question. But what I want to know. Thanks:]
