How to legally use runway (fashion) pictures on blog?

I recently started a blog and would like to widen my topics. So far I’ve simply used photos taken by myself and father.
I see other blogs using photos and images from runway shows and even scans from magazines, but I’m a very careful sort of person and would like to do things right.
Will simply giving the photographers name and what publication etc they shot the image for do? Or do I need specific permission?

I normally research my catwalk images on vogue.co.uk and I can’t even link to specific images there.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

You will need specific permission to use any image that you did not create yourself unless it is stated that the photo is free to use in other places.

You have entered the mind-blowing vortex of copyright law. If you want to be on the safe side, you can’t use the image without the photographer’s permission, even if you attribute the image to them.

Enter Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a license which allows people to let other people reuse their images. It’s a nice, everyone’s-happy license. There are several different types of Creative Commons license, but the general gist of them all is that people can use the creations.

The only things you’ll need to know if you’re running a blog are that “ND” in the license name means you can’t edit the photo, “BY” means you have to attribute the photographer, and “NC” means you’re not allowed to use the image for commercial purposes – not that you’re likely to as a blogger, but it’s if you’re making a ton of money that it falls into question.

So where can you find some of this Creative Commons stuff? Well, not that I’m a Yahoo! insider or anything, but now is a relevant time to plug Yahoo!’s Flickr. It’s a very good site for finding Creative Commons licensed photography, and they quite often have some damn good photography over there too.

To search Flickr for Creative Commons content, you can just go to this URL:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=SEARCHQUERYHERE&l=cc

(replacing SEARCHQUERYHERE with what you want to search for, obviously)

Or you can just go to

http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/

and tick the box which says “Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content” (don’t need to tick the other boxes unless you really want to).

For more details, and some rather neat photography, head off to http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons .

Yahoo! should be happy now I’ve plugged their service.

You can, of course, also search for Creative Commons-licensed content at the Creative Commons website at:

http://search.creativecommons.org/

(just choose a tab with the word “Image” on it)

Happy blogging to you, and I hope you find the solution you’re looking for. :)
